// 01The Challenge

What was the problem or pain point

Client Dilemma & Technical Bottleneck

Holiday Swap, backed by global hospitality leaders, aimed to revolutionize budget travel by allowing property owners and renters to swap homes globally without booking fees. The platform faced immense product and trust hurdles: users were hesitant to swap homes without verifiable identity guarantees, cross-border currency conversion for security deposits was cumbersome and costly, and real-time chat between users frequently dropped or failed across spotty mobile connections in international destinations.

// 02Strategic Advice

What we suggested to the client

Solid Sphere Architectural Recommendation

Solid Sphere recommended creating an immersive, mobile-first experience centered on social trust and frictionless escrow. We proposed implementing an instantaneous peer-to-peer messaging system with end-to-end photo and video sharing, integrating automated biometric identity verification (ID document scanning + selfie liveness), and deploying a multi-currency escrow payment engine using Stripe Connect so security deposits could be held and released without international banking delays.

+Key Complexities

What made this project challenging

01

Enabling instant home swapping and token-based booking across 185+ countries with distinct regulations

02

Building high-throughput real-time messaging with instant multilingual auto-translation

03

Preventing fraudulent listings and managing secure identity verification for international hosts

04

Handling complex currency conversions and deposits with multi-party escrow

// 03Engineering Execution

What was implemented and how it was implemented

Step-by-Step Technical Execution

We developed native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) applications featuring a Tinder-style property discovery feed, interactive map search, and granular travel dates matching. We built a WebSocket-based messaging server running on Node.js that provided instant delivery indicators, typing receipts, and real-time push alerts. For trust and financial safety, we integrated third-party KYC identity verification workflows and architected a Stripe Connect custom account workflow: users entering into a swap agreement had their refundable security deposit pre-authorized and held in escrow until check-out confirmation was received from both parties. The cloud backend on AWS was structured with microservices for property indexing, swap matchmaking, and notification dispatch, ensuring 99.9% uptime during peak holiday booking seasons.

+Key Deliverables

How we delivered

1

Built native iOS and Android apps with rich map discovery and calendar availability management

2

Engineered WebSocket real-time messaging architecture with push notifications and read receipts

3

Integrated Stripe Connect multi-currency escrow payment flow with deposit protection

4

Implemented automated government ID and address verification workflow for host trust

// 04Architecture & Stack

What did we use to implement it

Technology Stack & Technical Rationale

Swift and Kotlin provided fluid native mobile UI experiences, camera hardware integration for home photography, and location-based discovery. Node.js was selected for the chat and swap matchmaking microservices due to its event-driven architecture and seamless handling of persistent WebSocket connections. AWS (ECS, S3, CloudFront) provided globally distributed hosting and rapid media asset delivery. Stripe Connect powered multi-currency payment routing, escrow authorizations, and automated refund triggers, ensuring full compliance with international financial regulations.
