// 01The Challenge

What was the problem or pain point

Client Dilemma & Technical Bottleneck

BranchBob aimed to become Europe's fastest and simplest cloud e-commerce platform for micro-merchants and small businesses. Unlike Shopify or WooCommerce, which can be intimidating and expensive for novice merchants, BranchBob promised an online store setup in under 60 seconds with zero monthly subscription fees. However, their multi-tenant architecture was struggling to scale: provisioning new store instances caused database lockups, product catalog caching was inefficient across tens of thousands of tenant subdomains, and international merchant payment setup was complex.

// 02Strategic Advice

What we suggested to the client

Solid Sphere Architectural Recommendation

Solid Sphere recommended modernizing the multi-tenant architecture into a high-throughput, schema-isolated cloud platform. We proposed building an instantaneous onboarding wizard in Vue.js, refactoring the Ruby on Rails backend with Redis dynamic routing for multi-tenant custom domains, and integrating a unified Stripe payment gateway that allows instant merchant onboarding and checkout in multiple European currencies.

+Key Complexities

What made this project challenging

01

Empowering small businesses worldwide to launch free, full-featured online stores in under 5 minutes

02

Architecting multi-tenant database infrastructure capable of hosting hundreds of thousands of storefronts

03

Supporting global multi-currency payment gateways, tax calculation rules, and shipping methods

04

Ensuring blazing-fast storefront page load speeds on mobile networks worldwide

// 03Engineering Execution

What was implemented and how it was implemented

Step-by-Step Technical Execution

We re-engineered the merchant onboarding flow into a three-step wizard that creates an active online store, imports initial products, and assigns a customized subdomain in under 45 seconds. We optimized the multi-tenant Ruby on Rails core by implementing dynamic schema switching and tenant-scoped Redis caching, ensuring that traffic spikes on one merchant's storefront had zero performance impact on neighboring stores. We built a responsive Vue.js storefront template engine allowing merchants to customize themes, color schemes, and banner images with instant live preview. We integrated Stripe Connect to enable merchants in over 30 countries to accept credit cards, SEPA direct debits, and local payment methods with zero setup delay. Automated SSL certificate generation was implemented via Let's Encrypt for custom merchant domains.

+Key Deliverables

How we delivered

1

Engineered scalable multi-tenant Rails backend with isolated tenant scoping and custom domain mapping

2

Built drag-and-drop merchant administration dashboard for product catalog and inventory control

3

Integrated global payment providers including Stripe, PayPal, and regional European gateways

4

Implemented edge-cached storefront theme rendering delivering sub-second load times globally

// 04Architecture & Stack

What did we use to implement it

Technology Stack & Technical Rationale

Ruby on Rails provided the rapid, battle-tested multi-tenant backend and API architecture. Vue.js powered the reactive merchant dashboard and customizable storefront theme engine. PostgreSQL managed isolated tenant data schemas and transactional order records with high integrity. Redis handled dynamic domain routing, session caching, and rate limiting. Stripe Connect powered multi-currency merchant payment processing and automated fee splits. AWS provided auto-scaling cloud infrastructure.
